US Open caps a wacky 2013 tennis season

NEW YORK (AP) — A surprise Wimbledon champion one day, a retired player providing TV commentary the next, nobody's been in touch with the fickle nature of tennis in 2013 better than Marion Bartoli.
So, when asked if Serena Williams was a shoo-in to defend her title at the U.S. Open, which started Monday, Bartoli's answer came as little surprise.
"In sports, at the end of the day, you can't write the story before it's over," she said.
Given all that's transpired in the lead-up to the year's final major, it would be foolish to try:
—There was the sudden retirement of Bartoli, the 28-year-old from France who realized a few weeks after Wimbledon that her body couldn't take the pounding anymore.
—There was the withdrawal of Maria Sharapova, ailing with a sore right shoulder and also still spinning from a whirlwind partnership with Jimmy Connors, whom she hired, then fired, as her coach, after playing only one match.
—There was that strange, crooked number placed next to Roger Federer's name: a "7'' — worst seeding at the U.S. Open for the five-time champion since 2002.
—And there was the sudden reemergence of Rafael Nadal, who, for the last year-plus, has made headlines with his injuries and early exits (along with, of course, another French Open title) but finds himself with a 10-0 record on hard courts in the lead-up to the U.S. Open.
"Nobody in my family, my team who is close to me seven months ago, thought about a comeback like this," Nadal said. "I feel very lucky. I feel very happy to be in this position."
Second-seeded Nadal, who missed last year's U.S. Open with an injured knee and the 2013 Australian Open with a stomach virus, came back to win the French Open, then was bounced from Wimbledon in the first round, opens his 2013 stay at Flushing Meadows on Monday with a match against American Ryan Harrison.
The day started with some big news from a veteran U.S. player: Three-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist James Blake announced he would retire after the tournament at age 33.
Federer plays Grega Zemlja in the day's last match at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Top-seeded Williams begins the night session against Francesca Schiavone.
Third-seeded Agnieszka Radwanska was playing the tournament's first match on Ashe's center court against Spain's Silvia Soler-Espinosa.
Also on court Monday are fourth-seeded David Ferrer and, on the women's side, 16th-seeded Sabine Lisicki. Lisicki knocked off Williams at Wimbledon, though her last appearance on a grand stage had her dissolving in tears during a 6-1, 6-4 loss to Bartoli in the final at the All England Club.
The Lisciki-Bartoli final at Wimbledon seemed to come out of nowhere and, now, almost everyone in the 128-woman draw at the U.S. Open has to believe she has a chance.
"I think it's fair to say that there are a bunch of players that are capable of winning Grand Slams and capable of doing great things out here," said 11th-seeded Samantha Stosur, who defeated Williams in the 2011 final. "That hasn't always been the case."
The men's game hasn't been nearly as unpredictable.
Federer, Nadal, Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic have won 33 of the last 34 majors dating to 2005.
Third-seeded Murray is the defending champion and coming off a career-defining win at Wimbledon. Top-seeded Djokovic has appeared in the last three U.S. Open finals.
Federer? He hasn't been to the final since 2009, when he lost to Juan Martin del Potro. His year has been slowed by an aching back, an unsuccessful experiment with a new racket, a second-round exit at Wimbledon and the slow, steady decline of his ranking.
His struggles may very well stand out as the biggest surprise of all in 2013, but at 32, Federer thinks he might have one more to spring on tennis fans.
"People are going to say what they like," he said. "Important is that I concentrate on my game and that the passion is there, that I work the right way, that I'm prepared, and that I feel like I can win a tournament."

Katy Perry, Lady Gaga and Miley Cyrus all took to the stage, giving some of their raunchiest performances to date.
All three ladies - who are currently promoting new albums - chose skimpy outfits for their respective performances, with both Lady Gaga and Miley performing in underwear, while Katy wore boxing shorts and a tight fitting crop top.
Miley had perhaps the most scandalous stage appearance when she performed her song We Can't Stop with Robin Thicke and a group of backing dancers dressed as teddy bears.

'Make some noise!' the young star screamed as she grabbed her crotch and stuck her tongoue out, in a out fit that appeared to be a furry swimsuit.
She then ripped off her costume to reveal flesh-coloured latex underwear, as Robin Thicke and 2 Chainz joined her onstage to duet on his song Blurred Lines.
Miley then really pushed the boundaries of what is deemed acceptable behavior on television as she suggestively danced alongside Robin.

This Labor Day sees more jobs, but worse jobs

Demonstrators in support of fast food workers protest outside a McDonald's as they demand higher wages and the right to form a union without retaliation last month in New York's Union Square. Reich argues that in order for worker wages to be fair, corporate benefits – like big shareholder returns and generous compensation packages – need to be trimmed.

The good news this Labor Day: Jobs are returning. The bad news this Labor Day: Most of them pay lousy wages and low if non-existent benefits.

The trend toward lousy wages began before the Great Recession. According to a new report from the Economic Policy Institute, weak wage growth between 2000 and 2007, combined with wage losses for most workers since then, means that the bottom 60 percent of working Americans are earning less now than thirteen years ago.

This is also part of the explanation for why the percent of Americans living below the poverty line has been increasing even as the economy has started to recover — from 12.3 percent in 2006 to around 14 percent this year. More than 35 million Americans now live below the poverty line.
Many of them have jobs. The problem is these jobs just don’t pay enough to lift their families out of poverty.
But wait a minute. Over this same period, productivity has grown by nearly 25 percent. That means the typical American worker is now producing a quarter more output than he or she did in 2000.

So if wages have flattened or declined for the bottom 60 percent, yet productivity has increased, where have the gains gone? Mostly, to corporations and the very rich.

All of which gives some context to the strikes in recent weeks at fast-food chain stores, such as McDonalds, where workers are demanding a raise to $15-an-hour from their current pay of $8 to $10 an hour.
And the demonstrations and walkouts at Walmart stores, whose workers are also demanding better pay. The average Walmart employee earns $8.81 an hour. A third of Walmart’s employees work less than 28 hours per week and don’t qualify for benefits.
Few of these workers are teenagers. Most have to support their families. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median age of fast-food workers is over 28; and women, who comprise two-thirds of the industry, are over 32. The median age of big-box retail workers is over 30. These workers typically bring in half their family’s earnings.
They deserve a raise.
At the very least, the minimum wage should be increased from the current $7.25 an hour to $10.50 — and to $15 in areas of the country with a higher cost of living. Had the federal minimum simply kept up with inflation from the late 1960s, it would already be well over $10 today.
Contrary to the predictable pontifications of conservative pundits, such a raise won’t cause many low-wage workers to lose their jobs.

Gas prices have dropped 4 cents per gallon in the last two weeks due to plentiful supplies. The average price is $3.56 -- 20 cents lower than a year ago, according to the Lundberg Survey.

Just in time for the Labor Day weekend -- gas prices have fallen again.
The average price for a gallon of gasoline slipped in the last two weeks, losing almost 4 cents due to abundant supplies, according to the Lundberg survey.
Gasoline cost $3.5596 per gallon on average on Aug. 23, down from $3.5895 on Aug. 9, based on a survey of about 2,500 retail stations in the 48 contiguous states. The average price per gallon had slipped 8 cents per gallon in the previous two-week period and is now 20 cents lower than a year ago.
Trilby Lundberg, editor of the Lundberg survey, said the drop in gasoline prices was due to increased supply of the motor fuel as U.S. refiners kept production capacity high.
"There's ample supply of gasoline," she said.
The most expensive gasoline in the states surveyed was found in Long Island, New York, and San Diego, California, at $3.89 per gallon, while the cheapest was found in Charleston, South Carolina, where it cost $3.22 per gallon.
On Friday, crude oil futures traded in New York rose 1.4 percent to settle at $106.42 per barrel.

Taylor Swift Sings "Jenny From the Block" With Jennifer Lopez

Taylor Swift is keeping a steady supply of surprise guests coming to team up onstage for her Red Tour. The night after Ellie Goulding joined the singer for a duet of "Anything Could Happen" at Los Angeles' Staples Center, Swift brought out none other than Jennifer Lopez to help her sing "Jenny From the Block" at the same venue.

"When I was a little girl, you know you have your favorite song that you just would play over and over and over again and just blast it in your room, and you’d sing in front of your mirror into a hair brush?" Swift asked the crowd, just before the 2002 hit's intro started pounding and J. Lo rose from a glittering platform behind the stage. "Los Angeles, this is my hair brush song."

Austin Mahone, 17, and Ariana Grande, 20, owned the stage at their pre-show performances at the MTV Video Music Awards by driving their fans wild with songs off their respective albums, Junior Year and The Way.

Austin Mahone’s VMA Performance

Austin made fans go crazy on with his hot summer song, “What About Love?” He opened the pre-show on the red carpet with impressive acrobatics from himself and backup dancers, giving the performance a hip-hop edge. He was stylin’ in a black leather jumpsuit and definitely gave the crowd great energy with his dance moves! We knew he was ready from the tweet he posted four hours before he performed, stating “I’m ready this is the moment I’ve been waiting for.”
He’s also up for the Artist to Watch VMA, going against artists Iggy Azalea, Twenty One Pilots, The Weeknd and Zedd (featuring Foxes).

Ariana Grande Stuns At The VMA Pre-Show

Ariana sweetly opened her performance with “Baby I,” unaccompanied by music and sounding beautiful, hitting her high notes confidently. Her backup singers and dancers later joined her, spicing it up on the carpet with “The Way” in a sparkly purple mini-dress. She also tweeted an hour before her performance, saying “I want to dedicate a tweet to the photographers on the carpet at the VMAs, thank you for putting up with my nerves. I’m peeing my pants.”
Obviously both singers were excited for their moment, and we loved witnessing their first MTV VMAs performance! With Ariana’s high notes and Austin’s swag, it’s hard to choose who had the better pre-show performance!
What do YOU think, Hollywoodlifers? Did Austin or Ariana shine more during the VMAs?

Robin Thicke hit Brooklyn's Barclays Center on Sunday night for a rousing performance at MTV's Video Music Awards.
Thicke performed his summer hit "Blurred Lines" to music's finest, joined by Miley Cyrus for the performance. Cyrus' duet with Thicke was rumored in the hours leading up to the awards show. The performance consisted of Cyrus breaking it down with an army of bears, remixing "We Can't Stop" with Thicke's "Blurred Lines." The title track off of his sixth studio album, "Blurred Lines" earned Thicke four VMA nominations: Video of the Year, Best Male Video, Best Collaboration, and Best Song of the Summer.
"Blurred Lines," a collaboration with T.I. and Pharrell Williams, spent weeks atop the singles chart this summer, selling more than 4 million copies.
The 36-year-old singer did not expect the overwhelming success of "Blurred Lines," telling Radio.com in June, "We felt like maybe it was something special but it was so different. We didn’t know it would be this big."
Thicke was among a laundry list of performers who hit the VMA stage. Other artists who played Barclays on Sunday evening include Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Justin Timberlake, and Kanye West.
Live updates from the show are available below.
